The first Monday in May is more commonly known as the Met Gala, which happens to be the Super Bowl of the fashion world. This year’s event delivered plenty of high fashion looks, thanks to the insider-theme dedicated to legendary designer Karl Lagerfeld.
Latex
The Met Gala is an event known for taking risks so it’s not surprising to see some latex on the red carpet. This year, a number of celebrities wore latex on the red carpet, both as an accessory and as a focal point of their ensemble.
First was Salma Hayek, who wore a red Gucci gown with intricate details and multiple textures. The bottom of the gown featured multiple tiers of soft tulle specked with glitter, layered over red lace. The bottom portion of the dress was topped off with a bow, separating it from the much edgier top, which was a corset style top in a shiny, red vinyl that looked very similar to latex. The juxtaposition of the materials on the bottom of the dress versus the top half made for an eye-catching look with a focus on the bustier.
Other notable latex and latex-adjacent looks included model Quannah Chasinghorse and Aubrey Plaza, who used gloves to add a sexy element to their ensembles. Quanna’s look balanced soft, feminine details like pink tulle and flowers, with edge thanks to opera length black latex gloves, made by Vex. Aubrey Plaza also opted for leather gloves to complement her one-shoulder gown.
Last but not least was Kylie Jenner, who also chose Vex latex gloves for her second look of the night. The black wrist gloves with the finishing touch to her black and white sculptural after party look.
Other trends
Given the event is fashion’s biggest night, the Met Gala is often a showcase for what’s trending in fashion. Just like with Coachella, there were some noteworthy trends that caught our eye. First were flowers and rosettes which evoked the Karl Lagerfeld aesthetic and appeared on celebrities including Cardi B and Qunita Brunson. And Rihanna made quite the late, but notable, entrance, wearing a Valentino cream colored dress with a cape that featured over 30 giant floral appliques.
Other embellishments were also popular, including feathers, seen on Nicole Kidman and Doja Cat, as well as sequins and pearls, which were worn in full detail by Kendall Jenner and Lil Nas X, respectively.
Lastly, the naked dress trend, which was prominent at Coachella, also made an appearance at the Met Gala. Actress Suki Waterhouse opted for a flutter sleeve sheer dress that was almost the same tone as her skin, playing up the nakedness. The dress was embroidered with colorful flowers, which matched her eye makeup, contributing to an ethereal take on the trend.
