Carly Rae Who?
I think the title pretty much sums up this episode. However, since you’re reading this post, I’m guessing you would like to hear more.
Personally, I LOVE the jacket I made for this episode. It was amazing. I wish I had more detail photos of it. Unfortunately, there is so much that is missed only seeing it on TV. I was so busy making this outfit that I forgot to take photos :(
My pitch and accompanying sketch was very well received by the mentors. My idea for Carly was a 'Rocker' Chanel tweed jacket. Mel and Rajni Jacqes from Glamour Magazine loved my ideas and approved me to go shopping right away. Mel told me he loved my personal style—which was awesome to hear. Rajni said she had heard great things about me. Right then I was really feeling the expectations. Like the pressure of the show wasn’t tough enough already, now I have two people from the fashion industry giving me compliments who I don't want to let down.
Originally, my plan was to make the jacket in denim. Looking back, I wish I would have just bought denim. I think if I had, I might have gotten pulled for this challenge. At the fabric store I was not impressed with the denim they had available, so I went with a black linen which frays really well. We had one hour in the fabric store to get EVERYTHING we needed. So sometimes I needed to just make a quick decision and not look back.
I also wanted to create my own print. It turned out ok, but I don't love it. One thing I really wanted to focus on while on this show, was to push my limits and get out of my comfort zone. Dyeing my fabric to create an original pattern for the first time very much achieved this goal. Then again, sewing professionally for the first time in 13 years has really challenged me as well. I love latex, but since only glue is used in the construction, my sewing skills are not what they once were. I wish I had at the very least made the pull for this challenge, but overall I feel like I personally succeeded in it.
