Did you know that latex is considered an eco-friendly and sustainable material? In honor of the upcoming Earth Day, we decided to break down some facts about our favorite fabric. Scroll through to learn more about latex and its origin.
What is it and where does it come from?
Latex, as opposed to vinyl or some types of rubber, is a natural fiber and comes from a tree. In fact, it was named from the liquid produced by certain trees (see below) and the name “latex” means “liquid” in Latin. While often mistaken for latex, vinyl and rubber are actually synthetic and man-made (you can read more on that here).
How is it produced? And is it sustainable?
Because of its versatility, latex is harvested and used all around the world and is produced into a wide variety of products. Even better, the harvesting of latex is an eco-friendly, sustainable process. Most trees producing latex take several years to grow and they must be mature enough before it can be harvested, so the trees are well protected. In fact, the latex itself is used to protect the tree, so there are limited amounts harvested from each tree every year. In between each tapping (the process for removing the latex from the tree), the tree’s bark is given time to heal and grow back the bark that was removed in the process. This process is more environmentally friendly, because it helps to protect the trees and helps to sustain them. Since little to no chemicals are used or added, harvesting latex is an environmentally friendly process.
What’s the difference between latex and other materials?
Natural latex is, as its name suggests, more natural and therefore safer for the environment as opposed to synthetic latex. The synthetic materials aren’t made from natural fibers, and may contain artificial chemicals, which are not only harmful for the environment, but they can also be harmful to those who wear them. Natural latex is converted from its original substance into many products. When used for fashion, it’s turned into the rolls you see below.
Everything you see from Vex is made from real, natural latex, not synthetic. It’s not only safer for you to wear, but it’s better for the environment. A win, win in our opinion!

Nice to know that my much cherished favourite thing to wear is not threatening the life of the trees it comes from. 💕
