February is one of fashion’s biggest months thanks to the countless runway shows taking place globally. This year, latex is one trend dominating the catwalks of fashion week. Keep reading for some of our favorite latex moments, straight from the runway.
New York
Fashion Week began in New York, where Dion Lee’s collection was a mashup of textures, thanks to the use of lace, shearling, leather, and, of course, latex (among other materials). The show featured looks that are both practical and sparse at times, resulting in an aesthetic that was utilitarian and sexy. The designs didn’t lean too heavily into any one fabric, but rather, weaved new fabrics throughout the collection. Latex was featured in two ways we at Vex appreciate since we have similar designs). First was a black apron paired with lace gloves, an ironic and interesting couple. Next was a blood-red corset with zip details worn over a dress with hood and latex pants of the same color. Both looks were standouts!
London
In London, Richard Quinn’s fashion show was one of juxtaposition. The show began with models wearing classic, ladylike silhouettes, such as floral print coats paired with wide-brimmed hats. The collection took an unexpected transition when a couple wearing head-to-toe latex - including a leash, harness, and mask - strutted down the runway. The rest of the collection struck a balance between prim and sexy, showing some of the early ladylike pieces, such as hats and gloves, paired with latex.
Also in London, Jack Irving has made headlines for his presentation, thanks to the use of eye-catching inflatables. The designer’s On/Off Presentation featured many avant-garde designs with inflatable latex attachments that almost looked like limbs, making for an unexpected combination of sci-fi and sexy.
Paris
The latex trends continued on the Paris runways, as fashion houses including Loewe and Sacai dressed models in latex and latex-like materials. For Loewe, designer Jonathan Anderson embraced lesser used materials, such as resin, felt and of course, latex, featuring the latter paired with unique companions, such as shearling skirts. The Sacai show opted for layering, with latex-like leggings paired with mesh turtlenecks and chunky cardigans for a monochrome effect.
Milan
And last but not least, the runway shows concluded in Milan, where latex was still prevalent. First, for the Gucci show, latex made an appearance in the collection’s latest design collaboration with Adidas. Gucci’s designs consisted of unusual layering, pairing a red turtleneck latex bodysuit under a wool plaid suit with the Adidas logo. Versace also featured latex in its collection in a more prevalent way. Nearly half of the looks were worn with latex leggings, some under a short suit set and others under strapless tube dresses for a sexier look. One thing is consistent - latex dominated this year’s runway!
