Katy Perry on Stage in Custom Vex

A latex-and-leather ensemble built for the lights. Katy Perry opened her set with "Chained to the Rhythm" and rolled into "Dark Horse" and "Firework" wearing a custom Vex piece designed to hold up under stadium choreography — and command every camera in the room.

Stage costuming has a brief most fashion never sees: it has to look right from the front row and from the back of an arena, survive a full set of choreography, and read clearly under saturated lighting. Latex passes that test in a way most fabrics can't. It catches light, holds its shape, and photographs without breaking up — which is why Vex has been a touring-act go-to for years.

For Katy's performance, we built the piece in a mixed latex-and-leather construction. Latex for the high-shine panels that read at distance. Leather where the silhouette needed structure. The combination gives the look its bite — sleek under the lights, sculptural up close.

Why custom for the stage

An off-the-rack piece can carry a music video. A two-hour live set is a different problem. The fit has to be exact, the closures have to disappear, and the latex has to be cut to the artist's range of movement — not the other way around. Custom is the only way to land all three.

Hand-Cut to Movement

Every custom Vex stage piece is patterned around the performer's choreography. Reach, kick, breath. The cut adjusts so the latex never fights what the artist needs to do on stage.

Latex + Leather, Engineered

Mixed-media constructions like Katy's are built panel by panel. Latex for the shine, leather for the architecture, both finished by hand. The seams are designed to hold under heat, sweat, and full performance load.

Why Performers Choose Vex

Latex that survives the show

Touring artists, music-video stylists, and red-carpet teams come to Vex when the piece has to do real work — not just photograph well, but move, last, and keep its shape under pressure. Twenty-six years of doing this is twenty-six years of solving exactly those problems.

Behind the build

Custom stage pieces at Vex start with a single conversation between the artist's team and our studio. Reference imagery, fabric tests, fit forms, fittings. The Katy Perry ensemble took weeks of pattern work and panel testing before it touched a stage. That's the standard for everything we send out under a custom order — pop concert or private commission.

The same studio in California. The same artisans. 0.45mm English latex paired with the right leather weight for the silhouette. No shortcuts, no outsourcing.
